I am currently adding new raised beds to my garden and want something pretty and timeless to support my peas and beans. Pinterest and Instagram are my inspo places and obelisks, tuteurs and trellis’ are what I am drawn to. The Internet is full of DIY options with cattle panels, wires and hooks, and wooden structures. My limitations right now are that I do not currently have a truck and I am trying to not spend too much money on this project. I think I know what I want to do for my garden but I thought I would put down some of the other options for my readers to see. Let’s get into it.
Purpose
All three of these structures create vertical space for plants to climb and grow on. Obelisks and tutuers are basically the same thing. Historically obelisks were made of stone and held more of a symbolic significance while tutuers were mainly used it the garden. Now they are used interchangeably to mean a trellis like pyramid structure for gardening and plants. I think tuteur sounds fancier so that’s what I will call mine when it’s finished.
Trelliss’ are commonly used in vertical gardening as a lattice like pattern for the plants and vines to climb up. Right now arch trellis’ are big and trendy which is understandable. They are beautiful once they are full of flowers, vines or vegetables. Trellis’ are also incredibly functional in adding space to the garden you wouldn’t have otherwise.
DIY Tutorials
I have been looking for a good tutorial for a diy tuteur or trellis. The internet is full of them. I am searching for one that is doable with my limited amount of tools and skill. I can build Ikea furniture like nobody’s business but sometimes building things from scratch is a little trickier. Let me show the the best ones I’ve found
Best Plants for Trellising
Being that it’s early spring and still a little chilly outside, my mind has been stuck on vegetables and flowers that like the colder weather. Vegetables like peas and flowers like sweet peas are great for trellising this time of year.
As it warms up, veggies such as pole beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, melons and pumpkins can all be trellised. The heavier ones will need some support of course but a pumpkin arch is such a fun idea. Flowers like black eyed Susan vines and nasturtiums work really well on a garden arch or trellis as well.
I have so many ideas for my garden this year and a tuteur and trellis are at the top of the list. A big black eyed Susan arch way is also up there. So pretty! Hopefully this gives you some ideas for your own obelisk, tuteur and trellis this year. Happy Gardening!
