Hello World!

05.10.23 | The Freshman Gardener | No Comments

Welcome to my internet garden! I believe that gardening is for everyone. My goal with this site is to give beginner gardeners a place to start.
For years and years I have been planting and growing things but still get overwhelmed all the time. I can’t wait to share all the things I have learned with you!

Gorgeous Black Eyed Susan vine flower rich in orange and green color.

Gardening was instilled in me from a young age. I come from a long line of gardeners. My parents had a beautiful yard when I was growing up. I remember hearing them talk about hollyhocks and begonias and hostas and feeling like it was a foreign language. My dad especially loved growing food. When I was 7/8 he came home with a truck full of fruit trees he had saved from the trash bin at a local nursery. We spent the next month of weekends planting and caring for those trees. He turned those garbage fruit trees into a healthy little fruit orchard in the heart of our small neighborhood. As I grew older, our garden did as well. I never minded pulling weeds or picking peas so I guess the gardener in me was budding.

It’s funny how plants can remind us of people or places and even events in our lives. Red geraniums always remind me of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho where I grew up. If you’ve ever been there, you’ll know what I’m talking about because the main flower used in the downtown area are those red geraniums. Lilacs remind me of springtime and sunshine and their smell automatically lifts my spirits the way springtime flowers do after a long winter. Daisies bring me right back to my horseback riding days where they’d cover the fields we rode in.

Who could resist these cute fluffy girls?

As I grew older and became more interested in growing things, I looked to my parents and google as my main sources of knowledge, and had a lot of trial and error. Before I was married and lived in an apartment, I grew paperwhite lilies in a glass jar on my dining room table. As a newly married wife, I planted and replanted the same flower bed in the front of our house over and over again. That poor garden bed had its fair share of struggling flowers. Now we have 2 acres and I’ve spent the last two years planting and moving and replanting bushes and shrubs and flowers to find the best combinations. I’ve struggled with grass and growing a lawn from scratch. I even build my first raised beds this year and can’t wait to show you how.

Gardening is for Everyone

I am convinced that everyone can grow something. With the right knowledge and tools, you could be well on your way to having your own little garden nook. I hope to make things simple and easy and most importantly doable! I have been dreaming about starting this blog for years and I’m excited that it’s finally coming true.
