January Garden Checklist

The January garden checklist is just as important as the other months, even in the dead of winter. The nice thing is that we’re a bit closer to spring and the days are starting to slowly get longer. When it’s cold however, it’s easy to forget (or avoid) the things we can still do as gardeners. I have a hard time getting bundled up especially if theres snow on the ground, to go outside and work. Pruning and planting are still big items on the checklist but that cold fresh air is good for us right?! It’s nice once I’m out there to check on all my plants and trees and really examine them while I’m pruning.

Garden Checklist

  • IF you still have ground that isn’t frozen, plant bear root trees and shrubs. They don’t have a dirt ball around the roots. I’ll write up a post on how to plant them but for now, google that because it’s a little different. Now is the best time to plant them plus they tend to be cheaper this time of year.
  • Prune fruit trees – specifically apples and pears
  • Scour plant catalogs online and order some through the mail
  • Find gardening and flower farms to follow on social media
  • Prune wisteria to help with flowering in the summer
  • Prune roses by cutting any diseased or dead branches
  • Check on your indoor plants and make sure you are top of watering and pest control and also that they are getting enough sunlight

Bare Root Trees and Shrubs

Here are some of my favorite places to purchase bare root trees and shrubs:

  • Green Thumbs Garden
  • Grow Organic
  • Jackson & Perkins
  • Prairie Moon Nursery
  • Cold Stream Farm
